We found this piece for $8.99 at Goodwill + I knew it would be perfect, not to mention sturdy, to put in our boys’ bedroom. Since our move we’ve un-stacked their bunk beds + given more of a free reign in terms of what they do or don’t want in their space. But they did both agree that it would be nice to have a bookshelf + a space to display some other fun things.
The “before” thick brown paint was hiding some decent wood underneath. We took a cool afternoon to scrape off the old paint, which turned out to be really easy because the wood was never actually prepped for painting. You can see some of the super hideous color on the very bottom of the stand.
I wanted something fun for the boys that offered a sort of “super-charged” color that fits their very rowdy personalities. I fell in love with this blue shade, Planetarium by Olympic, from Lowe’s so we bought a quart + got to work. We spent the rest of the afternoon in our garage + part of the early evening painting everything blue. My husband even added another coat the next day.
Our finishing results stunned even us! We used the entire quart of paint + it covered the entire thing.
After it fully dried we moved it into our boys’ room + let them go to town displaying games, favorite toys, hobbies + books. Well, I supervised so they wouldn’t try to pile everything on the shelves. We used some knobs we had leftover from our closet doors that we used in another project which turned out to be the perfect size for the single large drawer on the bottom.
Not sure how long it will stay so neat but they’re loving it for now. We ended up using the drawer to hold the rest of their books and I think our next step may be a fun carpet for them to let their imaginations run wild with. At any rate it’s mini home hauls like this that I love the most when we get to take something + make it uniquely our own.
